Lesson Title:  Lesson 4 - Columbus's Leagues and Navigation

Lesson Overview
Students will learn about Christopher Columbus’s leagues and celestial and dead reckoning navigation.  Students will learn many vocabulary words in Spanish relating to these areas. Students will develop proficiency in the preterite tense and using new vocabulary words that are directly used in this Christopher Columbus lesson.

 

Standards Based Goal
My Spanish II students will gain knowledge and understanding of other people and cultures through the study of the Spanish history lesson.  Students will use knowledge and perspectives that can be gained only through the target language and culture.  Students will use world languages to interact in multilingual.  Students will use world languages to increase their understanding of the home language and culture.

 

Student Objectives
My Spanish II students will consistently identify and describe customs, traditions, beliefs, and values of Spanish.  (National/State Standard #2)  Students will consistently identify significant examples of historical and current events which shaped the Spanish culture and he or she applies knowledge of these events to understand the perspectives and behaviors of the people for the target culture.  (National/State Standard #5)  The student will consistently acquire information and perspectives through authentic materials from the target culture and continue to use these materials to gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of various aspects of the target language culture.  (National/State Standard #4)  The student consistently identifies components of the target language and culture used within the Spanish language; that he/she consistently demonstrates improved understanding and usage of the home language. (National/State Standard #3)

Prior Knowledge of Subject area- Students will to know how to use the preterite tense.

Connect to site, and ask student if the handouts are in front of them.

 

Students will go through the pronunciation and vocabulary with me in class.  We will stress pronunciation. 

 

 

I will help the students to figure out the meaning of the new vocabulary words for this unit plan.

 

I will give go over the assignment with students so that they understand the questions, in case I put any words in the handout that they don’t understand.

 

Extended Activity/Homework:  Students will start working on the homework assignment that is due the following day.  If they have any questions that night I will have a discussion on the WebCT from 9 p.m.-10p.m. and I will also be available after and before school for those at my remote site.

Special Considerations

Resource students will be grouped with other students for one on one help.  Students who struggle with vocabulary or the preterite tense will be able to further help from my website or via e-mail or after school from me.

 

Assessment   
Teacher observation will be used at each site.  Students from each site will have to have the worksheet finished for tomorrow.  I will check to make sure that all students finish the assignment.  I will also be checking students to make sure that students are using the preterite tense correctly and using their new vocabulary words in Spanish.
