II – Curriculum Overview

The study of
our second year Spanish language course, must be a combination of conversations,
reading, writing, with added emphasis on sentence structure, grammar, and a more
advanced vocabulary. Emphasis will
be placed on conversations, expressing feelings, emotions, exchanging opinions,
and asking for specific information. The
main goal of second year Spanish is to make a student feel comfortable with
speaking the language and being able to use it, in everyday situations.
As a student learns how to speak the language they will secondarily also
learn how to read and write words and phrases in the Spanish language. |
We
will use the textbook ¡Buen viaje! (dos), and the workbook along with other
textbook related materials. With
added emphasis on speaking Spanish and using more advanced vocabulary words, a
student can express themselves by presenting information, concepts, and ideas to
an audience of listeners and readers on a variety of topics.
This will help a student to develop a good foundation in Spanish, and be
able to use it in real situations. |
The
specific materials covered are: 1.
Use of
present tense with regular and irregular verbs. Use of the past tense, preterite and imperfect with regular
and irregular verbs. Knowing when
to use the preterit or imperfect. 2.
Stem
changing verbs in all tenses. The passive voice with se. The future tense. Comparatives
and superlatives. 3.
Groups of
vocabulary: train travel,
travel-related activities, restaurants, foods and eating utensils, computer and
telephone information, clothing, board games, hobbies, activities in the park,
hotel terminology, airplane and airport terminology, geographical terms, minor
accidents, parts of the body, emergency hospital care, life in the city and
country, kitchen appliances, utensils, and food preparation, automobile
terminology and driving, giving directions, beauty salons and barber shops, the
post office, the bank, and the dry cleaners, birthdays, weddings, holidays,
professions, occupations and job interviews. 4.
Indirect
object and direct object pronouns in the same sentences.
The conditional of irregular and regular verbs.
The present perfect. Irregular
participles. Making comparisons of
equal value. The imperfect progressive. Demonstrative
adjectives and pronouns.
5.
Formal
imperative: regular and irregular
forms. The familiar imperative:
regular and irregular forms and negative imperatives.
The subjunctive used in all situations, including ojalá, and quizá(s). 6.
Also
students will learn pronunciation rules, sentence agreement, use of direct and
indirect objects, advanced reflexive pronouns, conjugation of verbs, and genders
of nouns and adjectives. 7.
The study
of the culture of Spanish speaking countries, including our own Southwest.
This will include the geography, economy, literature, customs, religion,
art and music of each country. Religious
holidays, historical dates, and “Fiestas” will also be attained. 8.
Also
through the use of Spanish to English, and English to Spanish translations, both
oral and written, the ability to create a working language will be attained. |
