9th Grade English/Literature



                Plan of Study/Curriculum Overview

                         Students will need:
                    Pens and pencils everyday in class.
                    An English folder and book cover.
                    An English binder with paper.
                    Their tablets.
                    (English Dictionaries are available in the classroom and online for students to use.)
                       
                    Texts:

                    Penguin Edition, Prentice Hall Literature-Grade 9,  2010
                    Writing and Grammar, Prentice Hall-Grade 9, 2008
                   
                    To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
                    Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare  
                    The Odyssey, by Homer


                    If extra time:  
                              Walk Two Moons, by Sharon Creech;
A Separate Peace, by John Knowles
                              Lord of the Flies, by William Golding

                    Some of the movies we will watch that go with our literature:

                   
The Birds, by Daphne du Maurier and directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
                    I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou and directed by Fielder Cook.
                    To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee and directed by Robert Mulligan.
                    Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare.
                    The Odyssey, by Homer.
   
                   

                    Students will also have to do 4 independent reading book reports.  One each 9-weeks in
                    class.  The reading will have to be completed outside of class.
                    Students will also be writing a research paper during 2nd semester along with several smaller compositions.

          Classroom Expectations:
        1.  Be seated in your desk and ready to go when the bell rings.
        2.  Always be prepared by having the necessary items with you for class:  notebook/binder, computer
        textbooks, pens, pencils, etc....
        3.  Always respect each other's views and opinions.
        4.  Be courteous in waiting your turn.
        5.  Please always raise your hand.
        6.  No gum or candy in class, except when allowed.
        7.  No pop in class, except on Fridays when all assignments have been turned in completed
        and on time.
        8.  One student at a time can leave the classroom with the hall pass.
       
9.  Cell phones must be put in the basket at the front of my room or don't bring them to class!

            10. No playing games on tablets!

            11. No i-pods in my classroom, unless permission has been given!
